Welcome!

"Learn everything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can; there will always come a time when you will be grateful you did." ‒ Sarah Caldwell

2 hours a week clearly isn't enough to learn a language.

This is why I thought a blog might be a nice way to further our class discussions as well as to start new ones. I see this virtual space as a place where we can all exchange ideas and learn together and from each other... while practising English!

Feel free to post links, thoughts, questions, comments, articles, news, ... on education-related topics that you find interesting and want to share with the rest of the class!

Don't worry too much about language, just think of this blog as a place where you can practise English while learning new things about your field - education. This is an opportunity for you to learn from your peers, so write, share ideas, make mistakes, and keep this in mind:

“Never make fun of someone who speaks broken English.
It means they know another language.”
- H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

I hope you're as enthusiastic as I am about this blog experiment!

  1. I really like this quotation. Often as students, we consider learning and studying as a burden, a difficult time in our life and we are really lucky when this period has passed. But in fact, we forget that we are really really lucky ones, having the opportunity, the chance to learn all those topics which schools and universities propose to us. As the quote says « we should be gratefull » and motivated and absorb a maximum of new information. Which naturally doesn’t mean that life is just composed of learing, more learning and more learning behind the books. =) No, I even think that we do a majority of learning without books, by reading and experimenting, just by living our life, practise, listening to others, take decisions and measure the consequences of our decisions. Naturally, this isn’t academic learning but I think that we need both sorts of learning to really progress : « learn everything , anytime and from anybody you can… » And anybody can also be ourselves…

I think learning is very important for everyone who wants to move forward in his life. In spite of my difficulties, I am very motivated and eager to learn English which is for me, a "new" language. Finally, I know that at the end of the year, I will be proud of me.

  3. I think the fact of using technology to improve our english is a great idea! People are less afraid to freewrite about what they think when they are alone in front of their computer! I really hope this blog will give us an opportunity to exchange about our different visions of education. I'm really looking forward to read everyone and share some things I find interesting with all of you.
It's also a pleasure to be part of this experiment as it is the first time Mrs VanLinthout tries it. I hope and think it will go well and that this kind of huge brainstorming will be successfull!

  4. "Learn everything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can; there will always come a time when you will be grateful you did." ‒ Sarah Caldwell

I find this quote makes sense in our training and our future profession. For me, it is important to learn anytime and with anyone. However, it's even more important to share later that knowledge.
I haven't done English for three years and I don't think my level is high compared to others in the class. I'm afraid for the future. But then I learn from others and be able to have a right dialogueat the end of the year.
I am ready to do all possible efforts.

  5. Personally, it's the second quote which caught my attention. I think it's important to remember that we all have more or less a gift for something (for exemple, English (or not ^^)) and that these differences make us better everyday. Rather than seein the weakness of people, we should see their talents. We can learn from everyone because we all have differents skills...

  6. "Learn everything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can; there will always come a time when you will be grateful you did."

This quotation is very interesting. I think as soon as we have the opportunity to learn must be learned. We are fortunate to be in a society where many resources available to us (school, university, training, evening classes,...). Unfortunately some of us do not realize this opportunity. Yet it is important to make the most of what is available to us.
    We never stop learning...

  7. Hi, For beginning excuse me for my approximat english...but i hope become better with the help of this initiative and the lesson proposed by the courses of ISLV. Use all tecnologie to learn is a good idea because 2 hours of english in a week is not enough. So, to return to the quotation of Sarah Caldwell i'm totally agree with here quotation. Really i'm someone who like learn all time and everywhere... But there are a problem because all people have'nt possiblities to learn. I'm impatient to experiment this blog.

I wonder who this quotation is the most appropiate.I think that this article looks like commandments. Melissa, Christelle and Julie stresses the importance of learning. Of course. Learn about the world opens its doors, certainly. But it takes time, sometimes a lot of time. That's why I wonder if this quotation is appropriate for student learning. As students,we have deadlines, we need to develop skills, for me,learn in school is a fun but this is a system where the student is obliged to submit to succeed....pleasure disappears and the constraints appear. For me, this quotation is most appropriate for learning without pressure, a discovery learning, learning interest. No a school learning.

Ok, I hope that reading me is not too painful. :) I hope I can express myself better and better through this blog.

  10. I think I disagree with you here: learning as a student is (I think) exactly the same as learning as a "person". As for pleasure, learning can be difficult, but what the quote says is that you should just take advantage of any opportunity you have when it comes to learning. Learning from a friend, a teacher, a movie, a book, anything, anytime you can!
Of course as a student, learning may sometimes be associated with some sort of constraints, but at the same time, learning should be pleasure and nothing else. The goal of education is not to pass an exam, rather to acquire knowledge and experience. So in this context, even compulsory assignments become motivating and deadlines become mere details that are (apparently) inevitable in a school environment.
    What do you think?

  11. I think that's a good idea to create this blog because we don't have the problem to be ashamed of our accent in english as in class. Moreover, we have a lot of tools on internet to help us!
For the quotation, i agree with the idea of learning by every way you can. I think that it's very important thing to be curious in the life because, it's the best way to learn a lot of thing who won't be explained in the school book. Read, travel, discuss,... it's the best way to learn more about our world

  12. The best way to learn english is to leave in the country. I can't believe that we learn a language in another country.
If you want to learn English, you must go in England of america.
